Gila Cliff Dwellers

Today we drove up to see the Gila (pronounced Hee-la) cliff dwellings. We did a circle route going through Silver City on the way back. Cliffs being on mountains, it was a mountain drive - lots of skinny, twisty places. The highest point we were at was 7500 feet. There was snow along the side of the road.

The cliff dwellings are fascinating. The first inhabitants they believed lived there in about 400 AD. But the more recent dwellers (around 1270) build whole living quarters with divided rooms, roofs and many differnt areas. The leveling of the floors and the plumbing of rounded walls is evidence of excellent workmanship. It was definitely worth the hike up.

When we got back to the campsite, I hiked up to the top of our little hill so that I had cell service to call Carl and wish him a happy birthday.

Paul wants me to tell you it was another great day - shorts and sandals.
